The winter, with it’s holiday season and wide array of festive, fat filling foods, is usually a time most folks pack on some pretty serious poundage. People get less active, tend to eat more, and consume more empty calories than in the warmer months which can easily add back on the 20 or so pounds you might have lost last summer.

But on the other hand, the body can require up to 1000 additional calories per day during the coldest months to keep warm and to fend off wintertime viruses. So here are a few tips and ideas to help you stay healthy without gaining weight this winter.

1. Think Lean: During the winter, high fiber along with lean protein such as fish, turkey, and chicken is the way to go. Sufficient amounts of lean protein, as well complex carbohydrates, are important to prevent the breakdown of your stimulated metabolism that offers a fat burning module for the body.

2. Stock up on Vegetables: People eat more vegetables in the summer than in the winter, but it’s important that you get at least five to seven servings of vegetables each day throughout the year in order to stay healthy and lose or maintain a healthy weight. Fresh vegetables aren’t as readily available in the winter so remember to buy frozen instead of canned as these are usually the freshest of the two and keep plenty on hand for snacking. You might also want to think about light lunches and healthy dinner sides, such as, green salads topped with onions and cucumbers, barbecued zucchini, and steamed carrots or broccoli.

3. Indulge in Fruits: Even though fruits, such as oranges, usually grace the holiday dinner table, their consumption also goes down during the winter. But like vegetables, it’s important to maintain the minimum number of servings, at least four, of fruits in your diet the entire year. Strive to buy the freshest available when shopping or consider buying dried fruit which goes great with hot oatmeal.

4. Keep Moving: For most, winter is a time for sitting in front of the fireplace or watching television under a warm blanket while sipping on a hot, high calorie drink. Granted most outdoor activities shutdown during the winter and it’s hard to get motivated to drive to the gym when it’s 20 degrees on the outside. But to prevent weight gain over the winter months, exercise is a must. If you’re not shoveling snow for an hour a day you’ll need to find some creative ways to burn off some calories and keep your metabolism in gear.

Probably the best option here is to set up a home gym which can be anything from a treadmill in the corner of the den to an entire room devoted to exercise. Whatever you decide, the key to avoid gaining weight or to even lose weight this winter is to keep moving and not go into hibernation.

5. Drink Enough Water: As temperatures drop so does water intake. People simply aren’t as thirsty during the winter as they are in the summer. But drinking a sufficient amount of water each day not only helps you to lose weight, it’s also important for overall health. Aim to drink at least 2 liters of water daily, even during the winter months.

Lack of exercise is a major cause of chronic disease and other serious health problems and even though the number of people joining gyms in the United States has increased, there are still many Americans not getting enough daily exercise to stay healthy. For some, hectic work schedules and other day-to-day obligations leaves little time for a workout while others just can’t seem to get motivated enough to drive to the gym or to the park each day for 30 minutes on the treadmill or a brisk walk or a jog.

If you’re of those that can’t find the time or the motivation to exercise outdoors or in a public fitness center, then working out at home makes perfect sense. Today, adding more physical activity to your life is as easy as turning on your DVD player and whether you workout in a corner or devote an entire room to exercise, there are things you can do to add your on personal touches to your area to help stimulate your workout. Here are a few tips and ideas to help you create your own personalized setting to keep you motivated for success.

OUTFITTING YOUR HOME GYM
Finding ways to outfit your home workout area can be both simple and inexpensive. First, It’s important to find an area in your home large enough to support your fitness interests and goals. If possible, make it where you’ll have room to be able to move around freely without feeling cramped. If your gym is to include equipment such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, or barbells, set up a TV to curb boredom or at least set up your equipment in front of a window so you’ll have a view. You can also include a basket of magazines and a small, inexpensive radio/CD player or headset. Whatever you decide on, remember that the goal here is to create your own, personal workout friendly environment to help keep you motivated and your workouts enjoyable instead of something you find yourself dreading.

Another thing to consider is the flooring in your exercise room or area. Choose a place where your footing is sure and steady especially if you’re doing things such as aerobics or plyometric training. If you don’t have such an area in your home, then you may want to purchase exercise mats or snap-together rubber squares, which I highly recommend. Not only are these important for balance and footing, they also provide a psychological boost by defining the physical boundaries of your home gym that says this area is reserved for exercise only. A large standing fan is also a good idea, especially if your workouts are intense, which helps to keep you cool and your equipment dry.

If you’re one that’s easily bored or that likes variety, my may want to invest in several different pieces of equipment and/or exercise DVDs. A well-stocked home gym would include a treadmill or an elliptical trainer, a weightlifting bench, and some barbells or dumbbells. But another option you need to be aware of is that there is now a large selection of excellent exercise DVDs on the market that can give you a high quality workout without expensive equipment. If this suits your fancy, select some DVDs on yoga or tai chi for days when your energy level is low as well as some more intense workout DVD’s for those days when your more energetic. Variety is the spice of life and this is especially true when it comes to exercise routines in order to maximize results.

IT”S THE LITTLE THINGS
Sometimes it’s the finishing touches that you add to your home gym that does the trick to keep you motivated and your interest at it’s highest. Corner shelf towers can be added to hold towels or DVDs and if you have an entire room dedicated to exercise, a small refrigerator would be handy for protein drinks and water. Wall posters are a good idea and one or more standing mirrors always makes for a nice touch and are important for checking your form while performing various exercises. Just keep in mind when furnishing your home gym that the key to success when working out is to stick with it so do whatever it takes to make your workout as pleasurable as possible.

WHAT IS TOCOTRIENOL VITAMIN E AND WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS
Tocotrienol is one of two classes of naturally occuring vitamin E and is comprised of four different compounds: alpha, gamma, beta, and delta tocotrienols. The second class, tocopherol, is the most common form of vitamin E and both are well known for their high antioxidant activity and hundreds of studies have documented vitamin E’s overall ability to reduce the risks of developing certain chronic diseases.

However, scientists have only recently begun to discover that the tocotrienol class compounds of vitamin E have certain, unique properties unlike those of tocopherol vitamin E that are exceedingly effective in combating cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and chronic inflammation.

THE LATEST FINDINGS
In 2010, researchers in Singapore released findings from a study conducted to determine exactly how tocotrienols are so effective in lowering high blood levels of LDL cholesterol and stubborn triglycerides. The study found that the health benefits of a certain extract of tocotrienol vitamin E far surpassed what had been previously recognized, especially for those suffering from what is known as metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors that include high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and abdominal obesity.

It was determined that those individuals who took a daily dose of 100-200 mg of gamma-delta-tocotrienol found in both palm oil and rice oil extracts or purified tocotrienol supplementation experienced:

a drop in serum triglyceride levels of up to 28 percent

a reduction of total cholesterol and LDL levels by as much as 37 percent

a reduction in LDL levels by as much as 42 percent among diabetics

and a reduction of about 13 percent of very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL)

Tocotrienols are also shown to lower levels of chylomicroms, lipoproteins that transport fat from the intestines to other parts of the body as well as protect vital organs such as the kidneys from the adverse effects of metabolic syndrome and reduce the risk of stroke from atherosclerosis.

TOCOTRIENOL AND CANCER
Not only has current research found tocotrienol to be very effective in reducing the risk of heart disease, there has been a number of new discoveries about tocotrienol’s unique ability to prevent and battle cancer, primarily through it’s strong antioxidant properties and it’s above average ability to reduce inflammation.

In 2010 alone, scientists from institutions such as the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the National Institute on Aging discovered that tocotrienol, particularly gamma-tocotrienol, has the capacity to prevent the progression of some types of cancer at both nascent and microscopic levels. It was also discovered that tocotrienol causes cancerous cells to become more sensitive to chemotherapy drugs in the event of actual tumor development thereby potentially reducing doses and side effects and may offer protection against the cancer causing effects of medical, environmental, and occupational radiation exposures.

The most commonly found vitamin E supplement is d-alpha tocopherol, which in itself is excellent in its antioxidant and heart support properties. However, d-alpha tocopherol is only one of the eight isomers found in the entire vitamin E complex. The most complete form of vitamin E includes four tocopherol isomers (d-alpha, d-beta, d-gamma, and d-delta) as well as four tocotrienols isomers (d-alpha, d-beta, d-gamma, and d-delta).The Olympian Labs research and development team has created the market’s best formulation for a full spectrum vitamin E supplement that includes all eight of these essential isomers. Olympian Labs’ Tocomin® Tocotrienol Vitamin E Complete softgels deliver high levels of tocopherols and tocotrienols that protect the cardiovascular system by maintaining a healthy antioxidant status. If you were to analyze the diets of the world’s countries with the highest healthy life expectancy, you would find that they all have one thing in common. They all contain high quantities of some of the same nutrients. There have been countless studies that show a clear association between these nutrients and limiting the risk factors that cause chronic disease. Below is a list of 7 of some of the most important nutrients that are found in these diets along with some of their richest food sources. (Consult your health-care professional before adopting any of the recommendations listed here)

1. Vitamin D
Perhaps the most important disease-preventing nutrient known is vitamin D. Recent studies have found this supernutrient to be very effective in helping to prevent nearly every form of major chronic disease including heart disease and cancer. Fish, especially oily fish such as wild salmon, aldacore tuna, mackerel, and sardines are high in vitamin D and are staple foods of the world’s healthiest countries and is also a main dish of the Mediterranean countries of Greece, Spain, France, Monaco, Andorra, and Italy which are home to the famous health-promoting Mediterranean diet.

But the best source of vitamin D is sunlight and because of vitamin D’s superb disease preventative properties, scientists are now second guessing whether or not it’s wise to advise people not to spend time in the sun, associating to much sun to skin melanoma. More researchers are now <a href="http://www.sciencentral.com/video/2008/01/08/sunlight-vitamin-d-and-cancer/"target="_blank">recommending moderate sun exposure, without sunscreen, of 10 to 15 minutes at least three times a week. One of most commonly occurring deficiencies in the United States is vitamin D deficiency.

2. Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Simply put, omega 3 fatty acids are essential for good health but like vitamin D, most Americans are severely deficiency of this very important nutrient. Ironically, the same fish sources that are high in vitamin D are also high in omega 3s which further explains why countries who regularly consume these kinds of fish seem to be the healthiest.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to a healthy heart and have been shown to relieve the symptoms of arthritis. They’re also important in reducing chronic inflammation which has recently been found to be a major cause of all disease. Other good sources of omega 3s are extra virgin olive oil and plant-derived sources such as flaxseed, spinach, collard greens, legumes, and walnuts.

3. Resveratrol
Another main component of the Mediterranean diet, resveratrol ranks as one of the world’s top nutrients for preventing a host of chronic conditions. Just like omega 3′s, this potent phytonutrient can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease by significantly raising the HDL, or good, cholesterol in the bloodstream while at the same time reduces and prevents chronic inflammation.

Because it’s a strong antioxidant, resveratrol is important in helping to prevent cancer but unlike other supernutrients, resveratrol’s anti-cancer qualities doesn’t stop there. Researchers have determined that not only does this nutrient prevent cancer, but it also helps to cure cancer by crippling the function of various kinds of cancer cells thus enabling cancer treatments to become much more effective in killing these cancerous cells. Yet even another added benefit of resveratrol is it’s protection against diabetes.

Some of the more common sources of resveratrol are red wine, blueberries, peanuts and peanut butter, purple grapes, and cranberries or unsweetened cranberry juice.

4. Fiber
An examination of the diets of those cultures and countries that are the healthiest and live the longest would quickly show that they are all exceptionally high in fiber. However, it’s been estimated that most Americans don’t even get half of the recommended daily intake of fiber from their diet which is believed to be a primary reason for higher instances of serious and life threatening diseases in the United States.

But a diet rich in this powerful nutrient can prevent and even reverse such major chronic conditions as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, digestive disorders, and cancer. Fiber is also a key ingredient in dieting and weight loss.

Fruits, vegetables, and legumes all contain fiber and are also good sources of cancer fighting antioxidants. Whole grains and unsweetened cereals are also good sources. Some of the world’s best sources however come from exotic fruits such as acai and goji and from sea vegetables. These fruits and vegetables are also unusually high in both antioxidants and other essential vitamins and minerals than most of the fruits and vegetables grown domestically in the U.S.

5. Vitamin C
Everyone knows that vitamin C helps to fight infections such as the common cold but vitamin C’s disease fighting capabilities go far beyond just that. When consumed, this nutrient acts as the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body, neutralizing the free radicals that cause cellular damage which leads to chronic inflammation and cancer and just recently it was discovered to play an even a bigger role in fighting major chronic disease.

Scientists have discovered that vitamin C has the ability to react with and neutralize the toxic byproducts of human fat metabolism preventing the genetic damage and inflammation they can cause. Fat cells are actually active, especially abdominal fat cells, and produce toxic substances that have been shown to cause diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. By neutralizing these toxins, the risk of developing these diseases can be decreased dramatically. Vitamin C is also one of the best nutrients for boosting and strengthening the immune system.

Some of the best sources of vitamin C include parsley, broccoli, bell pepper, strawberries, oranges, lemon juice, papaya, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, and brussels sprouts.

6. Lycopene
For years doctors touted the health benefits of lycopene, but new research has proven that this robust little phytonutrient is full of strong antioxidants and offers substantial protection against many diseases that include cancers of the cervix, stomach, bladder, colon, lung, breast, and prostate as well as guard against cardiovascular disease by lowering LDL cholesterol levels.

In the United States, about 85 percent of lycopene is obtained from tomatos and the best place to find it is in tomato paste. Unlike most other nutrients that are destroyed by heat, the lycopene in tomatos is released only when the tomatos are cooked. Tomato sauce and stewed tomatos are also excellent sources. Today, many scientists and doctors support a diet high in tomato sauce and cooked tomato products.

7. Selenium
A classic rags to riches story, selenium was thought to be a poison when it was first discovered in the early 1800′s, but today has become a nutritional superstar.

Not only is this trace mineral a potent antioxidant on it’s own, but it’s also vital in the utilization and function of the body’s most powerful antioxidant glutathione, which is an absolute necessity to good health. Without glutathione, the body would not be able to detoxify itself of toxins and free radicals and would leave the immune system vulnerable to all forms of bacteria, viruses, and disease. In short, without glutathione the body would soon die which makes selenium a major supernutrient.

Selenium is found naturally in oily fish, oysters, clams, skinless turkey breast, and brazil nuts. Other nutrients that boost glutathione levels are magnesium, resveratrol, alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin E.

Several factors come into play when it comes to the reasons we develop chronic disease. Our genes, our environment, and our choices of lifestyle all play a role in the shifting of balance between health and disease within the body. Below are seven of the more commonly overlooked and neglected conditions that cause major disease:

Lack of sleep

Vitamin D deficiency

Imbalance of omega-3/omega-6 fatty acids in the diet

Lack of fiber

Lack of phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals

Too much sodium

Lack of exercise

1. Lack of sleep. Perhaps the most overlooked reason people develop chronic disease is lack of sufficient sleep. Sleep deprivation can have serious, cumulative effects on your health. It raises blood pressure, insulin resistance, and causes weight gain. Lack of sleep has also been found to be a major contributor to chronic inflammation which has been determined to be the root cause of all chronic disease including cancer. Studies have concluded that most people need 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night in order to prevent disease and premature death.

2. Vitamin D deficiency. In the United States an estimated three-quarters of adults and teenagers suffer from vitamin D deficiency. However, in the past few years there has been an explosion of new evidence showing vitamin D’s far-reaching health benefits including it’s ability to prevent diseases such as breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes just to name a few.

The good news about vitamin D deficiency is that it is easily remedied. Here are three ways to increase your intake of vitamin D:

Eat 3 to 4 ounces of baked or grilled wild salmon at least twice a week.

The best source of vitamin D is sunlight. Skin exposure of just fifteen minutes three times a week can increase your vitamin D level significantly.

Supplements offer a convenient way to make sure your getting enough Vitamin D.

3. The imbalance of omega-3/omega-6 fatty acids. This is caused by not getting enough healthy fats in your diet. It’s also caused by both too much grain fed red meat and too many processed foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids only. Recent statistics indicate that 99 percent of Americans do not eat enough heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids.

Maintaining the correct ratio of these two fatty acids could be the most important step you can take to prevent chronic inflammation. A healthy diet would consist of no more than two, perhaps three times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids but the closer you are to a 1:1 ratio the better. However most Americans consumes about twenty times more omega-6s than omega-3s which is the ratio found in most fast and processed food.

The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, the National Academies, recently set guidelines for omega-3 intake at 1.6 grams per day of plant-derived omega-3s for adult men and 1.1 grams for adult women and 160 milligrams per day of marine-derived omega-3s for men and 110 milligrams for women. However, some experts consider these recommendations to low, especially with the marine-derived omega-3s, with some recommending as much as 500 to 1000 milligrams per day for adult women and 1000 to 2000 milligrams for adult men.

Foods high in omega-3s include:

Flaxseed

Walnuts

Fish such as wild salmon, sardines, and halibut

Legumes such as navy or kidney beans

Extra virgin olive oil

4. Lack of fiber. The American Dietetic Association reports that most Americans don’t even get half of the recommended daily intake of fiber from their diet. But foods high in fiber helps protect us from many forms of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, digestive disorders, and cancer. These foods are also important in order to maintain a healthy weight. The American Cancer Society reports that about 90,000 Americans die each year from cancers influenced primarily from being overweight.

Almost all fruits and vegetables are high in fiber as are berries, legumes, grains and whole-grain products, nuts and seeds.

5. Diets deficient of phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals. This condition is due mainly to not getting enough unprocessed, organic whole foods. The American diet has come to rely heavily on high processed food whose nutrient density has been depleted to where it can no longer support good health. In fact, over 80 percent of registered dietitians now recommend dietary supplements to their clients to fill in gaps left behind from inadequate food.

It’s always best to get the proper amount of vitamins and minerals from whole foods as opposed to supplements and the only way to do this is to avoid processed food whenever possible and eat only organic meats and produce. At the very least opt for fresh, locally raised produce instead of produce found in conventional grocery stores. Sometimes, these fruits and vegetables travel great distances and are not nearly as fresh as what you would find locally and contain chemicals and other harmful substances used to enhance the flavor, aroma, and color.

6. Too much sodium. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calculates nine out of 10 Americans consume far beyond the recommended intake of salt every day, mainly from processed and restaurant foods and what a lot of people don’t recognize is that the salt that they put on their own food comes to only about 10 percent of total sodium intake.

One study found that excessive sodium in processed food could be responsible for as many American deaths as smoking. Doctor James Beckerman at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center estimates that if everybody were to lower their salt intake by just 1200 milligrams a day, America would see about a 100,000 fewer deaths a year.

Salt is a primary source of high blood pressure and is associated with stroke and heart disease, the United States’ number one killer. U.S. dietary guidelines suggest adults consume 2,300 milligrams or less of sodium daily, but 70 percent of the population, those with high blood pressure, should consume less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.

The Institute of Medicine has said the food industry has not done enough to voluntarily cut back on sodium levels but the food industry has been resistant citing concerns over taste. For now, the only thing you can do is to read food labels and look for those foods that contain either low sodium content or a sodium substitute.

7. Lack of exercise. According to the CDC, 70 percent of Americans don’t get enough exercise in order to maintain good health. But long-term inactivity and a diet consisting of only inadequate, nutrient deficient food will eventually cause the development of a chronic condition. Exercise is key to fat loss, detoxification, and overall sound health and is essential in preventing almost all chronic disease. Just by walking one hour a week can cut in half the risk of disease in some cases.
Recently, the American Cancer Society (ACS) published its first statement regarding it’s position on environmental and household chemicals as possible cancer causing agents. The statement called attention to more, much needed research on the full impact of these chemicals and their association with cancer in the U.S.

Usually, when people hear about “environmental factors” that cause cancer, they generally associate it with pollutants in the air and water or occupational exposures such as asbestos. However, there are now over 100,000 chemicals used in the consumer products that we come in contact with every day, and only a fraction have ever been tested for safety and it’s these common household chemicals that the ACS wants more attention to be paid to.

According to the statement, the ACS is calling for:

Tighter regulatory standards on chemical exposure both on the job and to the general public

Better funding for research

Greater public disclosure of chemicals being used so that individuals can make informed decisions

More detailed research on a chemical’s cumulative-exposure risk

Monitoring the accumulation of these chemicals in humans and in the food chain

“The environment as it influences health is far more broad than the public may think,” says Jonathan Samet MD, co-chairman of the ACS Subcommittee on Cancer and the Environment, who authored the statement. He goes on to cite examples of environmental exposures that are now ingrained in modern life, such as the recent report on cellphones as being a possible cause of brain cancer.

The statement issued by the ACS is a complete turn-around from their previous position on the carcinogenic effects of everyday chemicals and comes in the wake of a landmark report issued by the President’s Panel on Cancer in May of 2010 where the panel blasted public health officials for “grossly underestimating” the likelihood that everyday chemical exposure and environmental pollutants cause a large proportion of cancer in America.

At that time the ACS rebuked the panel for the report taking issue with the part about how environmentally induced cancers are “grossly underestimated” and claimed that the report didn’t give adequate attention to the major known causes of cancer including tobacco, obesity, sunlight and alcohol.

While it remains unclear why the ACS reversed it’s position, it is of course a step in the right direction but don’t expect any changes to be made anytime soon. It will take more than just a statement from the ACS to reduce our exposure to unsafe chemicals as the industries that manufacture these chemicals have strong ties in Washington and implementing any changes could take years unless the American public takes matters into their own hands and elects politicians that understand the dangers these more than 100,000 chemicals pose.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Despite the overwhelming number of chemicals we encounter each day, there are ways to protect yourself:

Stop smoking. Smoking contributes to 30 percent of all cancer-related deaths in the U.S. and is the most controllable source of cancer causing carcinogens.

Eat food that’s grown organically whenever possible. Pesticides in conventionally farmed fruits and vegetables have been linked to a host of health problems including childhood leukemia and breast cancer. Choose foods high in organosulfur compounds such as onions, garlic, and broccoli.

Clean your home naturally. Harsh chemicals in cleaning products have been linked to a wide variety of health problems and a lot are now suspected of causing cancer. The companies that make these products aren’t required to tell you what’s in them so the simplest way to avoid cancer causing agents is to make your own cleaners using natural ingredients like vinegar or baking soda. You should also avoid home care products that contain chemical fragrances which may be listed as “parfum” or “fragrance” on the label.

Test your home for radon. Radon is a odorless, colorless gas that seeps into homes through cracks in foundations and is the leading cause of nonsmoking related lung cancer in the U.S. It’s produced from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, and some areas of the country have higher instances than others. Visit www.epa.gov/radon to see if you’re in a high-risk area for radon poisoning.

Get vaccinated. 17 percent of cancer deaths are caused by viruses and other infections.

Onions And Garlic Are Especially High In Organosulfur Compounds

ORGANOSULFUR COMPOUNDS IN CERTAIN FOODS FIGHT CANCER, PREVENTS HEART DISEASE

Foods that are particularly rich in organosulfur compounds such as onions, garlic, and broccoli are very beneficial with helping to prevent both heart disease and cancer. Organosulfur compounds are important in preventing cancer because they activate the Phase 2 detoxification enzymes which is central to the body’s ability to protect itself from all manner of carcinogens. Phase 2 enzymes attacks carcinogens and renders they dormant so that they can be discharged from the body. In addition, foods with high levels of organosulfur compounds lowers both blood pressure and cholesterol, helping to prevent heart disease.

MORE HEALTH BENEFITS
Most, if not all, of the foods that are high in organosulfurs also contain important phytochemicals and powerful flavonoids which increases their health benefits. After eating, these foods raise antioxidant activity in the bloodstream and releases the enzymes that helps to eliminate carcinogens and toxins, then activates the body’s own detoxification mechanisms that kills cancer cells. Quercetin, found in onions, garlic, scallions, and shallots, is one such flavonoid that has strong protective qualities against both heart disease and cancer.

Many studies have been conducted on the chemopreventive value of these foods with all showing a sound association between the frequency of consumption and the reduced risk of several common cancers. One of the latest, published in the International Journal of Oncology in early 2011, reported that organosulfur compounds found in vegetables such as garlic and onions inhibit breast cancer cell growth and proliferation by interfering with the cycle of cancer cell division.

Garlic-derived organosulfur compounds also have been found to restrict the activity of certain inflammatory enzymes and decrease the production of inflammatory signaling molecules in the blood. Research has found that prolonged internal inflammation may be a primary cause of all chronic disease, especially cancer and cardiovascular disease and garlic’s heart health benefits have been well documented for years now.

CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES AND INDOLE -3- CARBINOL
Along with having high concentrations of organosulfur compounds, cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale and brussels sprouts contain the anti-cancer phytochemical indole-3-carbinol. Indole-3-carbinol acts like a phytoestrogen and like soy, helps reduce the effects of toxins and pollutants that adversely affects the body’s hormonal system. It also works as a strong antioxidant protecting the body’s DNA and other cell structures. And like organosulfers, indole-3-carbinol stimulates the production of detoxifying enzymes and gives added protection against the carcinogenic effect of pesticides and other toxins.

FOOD PREPARATION: GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR ORGANOSULFURS
To get the maximum benefits from organosulfur compounds, it’s recommended to crush or chop the food, then let stand for about ten minutes before cooking or eating. This allows for the release of enzymes to form the compounds, called allicin, that activates the variety of organosulfurs contained in the food. It’s also important not to overcook the food as the enzymes and compounds can be inactivated by heat.

The best way to cook these foods is to lightly steam them in a small amount of water or stir-fry. If you’re eating them raw, chew them for at least 15 seconds which also begins the activation process.

FOODS WITH THE MOST ORGANOSULFUR COMPOUNDS
Onions and garlic are known to contain the most organosulfurs. It’s recommended to eat 1/8 to 1/4 of a medium sized onion and garlic to taste as often as you like each day. Other similar vegetables are scallions, shallots, leeks, and chives. Broccoli is also high in organosulfurs and it’s recommended to eat at least one cup each day along with onion and garlic. Other cruciferous vegetables on this list include:

brussels sprouts

cabbage (red or green)

kale

turnips

cauliflower

mustard greens

rutabaga

liverwort

Organic Gardening For Your Health

ORGANIC GARDENING OFFERS MANY HEALTH BENEFITS AND IS GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
For anyone wanting to live healthy and reduce the risk of chronic disease, eating organic food whenever possible is a must and more and more people today are choosing to raise their own by planting an organic vegetable garden. Organic gardening will provide those and their families with safe, wholesome food that’s free of toxins, chemicals, and the other harmful residues found in most of the conventionally grown and highly processed foods of today. It’s Earth friendly and steers clear of genetically modified plants in which the health risks are still unclear.

BETTER TASTE AND MORE NUTRIENTS
The first thing you’ll notice when you eat organic food, especially when it’s fresh out the garden, is how much better it tastes than it’s conventionally grown counterparts. But more importantly, along with being toxin free, organic food is higher in nutrient content.

A four year study funded by the European Union (EU) on the health benefits of organically grown food found that organic food has a higher nutrient density than that of non-organically grown food. The multi-million dollar study, the largest of it’s kind, also found that organically grown food has higher levels of antioxidants which are beneficial in fighting cancer and heart disease.

Several other studies have also been conducted that show a steady decline in the nutrient content of conventionally raised fruits and vegetables over the past 70 years.

While scientists aren’t sure why organically grown food is more nutritious, they do have a couple of theories.

One is that the soluble nitrogen fertilizers used in non-organic farms and gardens forces rapid but weak plant growth and that these plants contain fewer of the antioxidants needed to protect the health of the plant. These are the same antioxidants that protect our health.

The second is that the food grown organically comes from healthier soil. Studies have found that after years of using synthetic, nitrogen and petroleum based fertilizers, industrial agriculture has depleted the soil of the much needed vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, organic growers don’t use synthetic fertilizers but instead rely on techniques that builds the quality of the soil used to grow the food.

GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, MINIMIZING WATER CONTAMINATION AND PROTECTING WILDLIFE
Each year Americans use about 1 billion pounds of synthetic pesticides in yards, gardens, homes, farms, and industry. In 2006, the U.S. Geological Survey published the results of a 10 year long study of pesticides in our nation’s surface water and groundwater. The study found that at least one pesticide was detected in every surface water sample and one third to one half of all groundwater samples. When it comes to health and safety, pesticides pose the greatest risks in agriculture and gardening.

However organic gardeners and farmers employ nontoxic methods of pest control such a row covers and repellents and by doing so not only keeps water contamination at a minimum, but also works to maintain a balanced ecosystem where all creatures play a role, even garden pests. By choosing not to exterminate pests with synthetic pesticides encourages the pests’ natural predators, such as birds and other wildlife, to take up residence in a balanced, toxic free ecosystem.

As a last resort, organic gardeners must sometimes choose to use pesticides only when control methods have failed. But when they do, they use only organic alternatives that break down quickly into harmless substances once they’re exposed to air, sunlight, and water. The ingredients in synthetic pesticides are on the other hand formulated to keep working by leaving residues in plants and the soil. Not only do they continue killing small pests and insects, their residues also accumulate in birds and other animals. Each year, tens of millions of birds are killed as a result of pesticide use.

But pesticides aren’t the only source of water contamination. Surface waters become polluted from runoff, when water flows over the ground, carrying not only pesticides with it but also synthetic herbicides and fertilizers. These chemicals then end up in rivers, creeks, and streams and even at very low concentrations can cause substantial harm to fish and other aquatic life.

While your own little organic garden plot may seem insignificant when compared to what commercial and conventional farmers spray on their crops, we can make choices that do as little harm to our local environment as possible and support those farmers who grow their crops using environmentally sound methods.

MORE PRODUCTIVE AND SAVES MONEY
Because organic gardening depends on techniques and methods designed to build rich soil, organic gardens are more productive and require less space than conventional gardens. This is perfect for families with smaller backyards or that have a very limited area to plant their organic garden. Even people with no yard at all, such as those living in apartments, can benefit from organic gardening by utilizing planters in and around their living space and balconies.

Of course, if you have the space you can plant enough food to last the entire year by freezing or canning your food which can significantly reduce your grocery bill while enjoying healthy, nutritious organic fruits and vegetables even through the winter months.

ORGANIC GARDENING IS GREAT EXERCISE
Gardening, or any type of yard work for that matter, is a great way to get your body moving. All daily activities such as raking leaves, mowing the lawn, and even gardening count to keeping fit and healthy. And both exercise and eating organic, chemical free food are two of the best ways to naturally detoxify and rid yourself of the dangerous toxins that cause chronic disease.

Antioxidants are a group of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that protect our cells from the damage caused by the physiological process of oxidation. During this oxidation process our cells, proteins and DNA become damaged by molecules called free radicals. Free radicals have also been found to be a primary cause of chronic inflammation, a major cause of chronic disease.

These highly charged molecules have incomplete electron shells causing them to be highly unstable. They cause damage by reacting quickly to the otherwise healthy cells nearest to it, trying to steal, or release, a needed electron(s) to gain stability. Once the healthy cell loses just one electron, it also becomes a free radical, starting a chain reaction.

Over time, this chain reaction becomes irreversible and could lead to serious and life threatening diseases, including cancer. Antioxidants work by neutralizing the free radical’s electric charge, thus preventing them from taking electrons from our healthy cells.

It is virtually impossible to escape free radicals as they come from
sources both inside and outside our bodies. They come from
environmental factors such as cigarette smoke, pollution, sunlight and ironically enough, even pure oxygen. It’s estimated that our bodies take on over 10,000 free radical hits a day.

HOW ANTIOXIDANTS WORK
Antioxidants work in two different ways by either breaking the chain of free radicals or preventing the chain from ever beginning.

1. Chain Breaking: Some antioxidants work by breaking the chain reaction of free radical activity by stabilizing the free radical. Antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamins C and E are excellent sources of chain breaking antioxidants.

2. Preventive: As well as breaking the free radical chain, some antioxidants offer the ability to stop the chain from being formed by preventing the oxidation process to take place within our bodies. Enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase reduce the chance of chain formation by hunting for, and neutralizing, free radicals before they can cause damage. With this, they prevent the oxidation chain from ever being set in motion.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE ANTIOXIDANTS
Scientific research has uncovered the powerful effects of antioxidants and there is little doubt that they are necessary for good health. In addition to their anti-aging properties, epidemiologic observations show lower cancer rates in people whose diets are rich in fruits and vegetables, both high in antioxidants.

A fact sheet published by the National Cancer Institute in 2004 stated “Considerable laboratory evidence from chemical, cell culture, and animal studies indicates that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer.” Antioxidants have also been proved to slow down, prevent and even reverse conditions like:

Diabetes

Diseases of the immune system

Diseases of the nervous system

Heart Disease

The evidence is “incontrovertible” and bears repeating, says Dr.Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg of Tufts University. Free radicals contribute to the onset of age-related diseases and antioxidants “neutralize” free radicals. Everyone should “take a combination of antioxidants” through diet and supplementation, he asserts.

Antioxidants also greatly contributes to overall physical appearance, helping you look and feel younger by slowing down the aging process.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I GET
Scientists use a unit of measuring called the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbing Capacity) to compare the antioxidants levels of various foods. The higher the ORAC rating of a substance, the more free radicals it can destroy. According to Agricultural Research Service, USDA (Tufts University of Boston), the recommended amount of antioxidants a person should consume daily should be a minimum of 5000-7000 ORAC units daily while the USDA recommends to eat foods containing at least 3,000 ORAC units a day.

FOODS HIGH IN ANTIOXIDANTS
The body can manufacture only a few of these micronutrients so most must be supplied from the foods we eat and there is no definite antioxidant diet. However a diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides a high amount and a variety of antioxidants. Studies have found that organic fruits and vegetables have highest concentrations of antioxidants.

There have been hundreds of observational studies linking diets high in antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables to a lower risk for diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, cataracts, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and arthritis. Other natural high antioxidant foods includes legumes, nuts and seeds, pomegranates, oranges, raspberries, blueberries, exotic fruit goji. The best way to be sure you’re getting an adequate intake of the antioxidants is to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables that consists of at least 9 servings, 5 of vegetables and 4 of fruit, each day. Also, foods high in antioxidants are usually high in fiber, protein and other vitamins and minerals and low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Recent figures indicate that 70 % of U.S. adults don’t get enough exercise, but physical activity and exercise provides many health benefits and is crucial in preventing chronic disease.

In fact, according to an article published in the <a href="http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/291/10/1238.abstract?ijkey=a73a6284b25b4a744eff0df80fde1c34a9494771&keytype2=tf_ipsecsha"target="_blank">Journal Of The American Medical Association (JAMA), March 2004, the number of deaths in the U.S. from chronic disease caused by lack of exercise and poor diet may soon overtake the number of deaths caused by smoking related chronic disease.

Throughout history, our ancestors were very active and needed to work hard, physically, to meet their basic everyday needs. But in the U.S. today, machines and technology has changed all that and has left most of the U.S. adult population living lives that are considered sedentary with one in four engaging in no physical activity at all.

However, lack of exercise contributes greatly to nearly every known chronic disease including heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and cancer and is one of the major reasons why we’re seeing such an increase of these diseases in the U.S., even among children and young teens.

HOW EXERCISE PREVENTS CHRONIC DISEASE
Exercise is essential in preventing chronic disease in two ways. One, by providing an efficient nutrient and oxygen delivery system to the cells and two, by removing harmful toxins from within the cells.

Preventing cellular deficiency. One of the two main causes of chronic disease in the U.S. today is cellular deficiency. When the cells are deprived of sufficient nutrition, they begin to malfunction which over time leads to developing chronic disease.

While eating nutrient dense foods is important in order to keep the cells healthy, exercise increases blood flow sometimes by as much as 20 times the resting rate, thus providing the body with a significant increase of nutrient and oxygen charged blood. This increase in blood flow provides the cells of the muscles and organs with substantially more vitamins, minerals, and nutrients than they would otherwise be getting from a nutritious diet without exercise.

Preventing cellular toxicity. The second main cause of chronic disease in the U.S. is cellular toxicity. We as Americans are exposed to countless chemical combinations from our food, water, and our air and are experiencing a toxic overload within our cells at a level never seen before.

Just like eating organic food or taking only herbal supplements, exercise is a natural and effective way to detoxify the body in order to bring down these toxic levels to help preventing disease. One way exercise accelerates the detoxification process is by stimulating the lymphatic system which removes toxins and other harmful materials from the organs.

OBESITY, EXERCISE, AND CHRONIC DISEASE IN THE U.S.
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions and today is considered one of leading causes of chronic disease in the U.S. One in three American adults and 20 to 25 percent of American children are now considered obese. About 300,000 deaths per year in the U.S. are directly related to obesity, and more than 80 percent of these deaths occurred in people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30.

While researchers know that there are several factors that contribute to obesity in the U.S., they all agree that the most common causes of obesity are foods high in fat, overeating and physical inactivity. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed that lack of exercise was strongly correlated with weight gain in men, women, and children and current research shows that abdominal fat is especially dangerous by increasing insulin resistance, a condition that leads to diabetes and one that has been now linked to cancer.
If your wanting more minerals and nutrients out of the foods you eat, then you should consider adding sea vegetables to your diet. Sea vegetables are among the most nutritious food in the world providing us with all 56 minerals and trace elements our body’s require and in quantities that greatly exceed those of land vegetables. Sea vegetables also contain chlorophyll which helps to restore energy and vitality and are virtually fat free.

Not many folks living in the western part of the world recognize the nutritional value of sea vegetables. However, people who live along the coastal regions of the far east have included sea vegetables as part of their diet for thousands of years. It has been found that these people live longer than people of most other nations and cultures of the world and with less disease.

SEA VS. LAND VEGETABLES
Some experts consider vegetables taken from the sea to be far superior over those from land because sea vegetables don’t contain the genetic modifications and chemicals frequently used in land farming. Land plants take carbon dioxide out of the air to make vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids. However, plants cannot make minerals and have to rely on getting minerals from the soil.

Today’s farming methods includes the use of fertilizers and other chemicals to grow crops and this can leave the soil devoid of many vital minerals needed by our bodies. Sea vegetables on the other hand get their minerals from the sea floor and from nutrient rich sea water both of which are free of the chemicals and genetic modifications found in land vegetables.

Another reason sea vegetables are viewed as better than land plants actually comes our on physical make up. Our bodies are made of 70% water and this water is salt water, being almost identical to that of water from the sea.

For this reason foods taken from the sea, including sea vegetables, are better utilized by our bodies causing more efficient assimilation of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals they contain.

HEALTH BENEFITS
Sea vegetables provide a rich source of naturally occurring plant source minerals and phytochemicals. In fact, just 1/4 ounce of dulse or kelp provides up to 30% of the recommended daily requirement (RDA) of iron, which is four times the amount found in beef and are the highest natural source of iodine by weight, containing up to 600 times more iodine than shellfish. They are also abundant in potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, chromium, sulfur, lithium, copper, vanadium, and iodine. They are packed with B vitamins and often contain vitamins C, E and A.

Sea vegetables also contain a near perfect ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, are high in fiber, and have an adequate supply of protein. Brown seaweed such as kombu and bladderwrack also contains fucoidan, a biochemical known which has the anti-inflammatory properties known to prevent a variety of chronic diseases. In fact, research currently being conducted has strongly indicated that the fucoidan found in sea vegetables may even interfere with the growth of cancer cells.

Learn The Modern Causes Of Chronic Disease

CHRONIC DISEASE IN AMERICA, STATISTICS, PREVENTION, AND MODERN DAY CAUSES
Living healthy and free of chronic disease in America is now more of a challenge than ever before. The number of Americans suffering from chronic disease has increased rapidly in just the past two or so decades and today 51 percent, more than half, of the U.S. population is struggling from conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke. In fact chronic disease in America is so prevalent it is largely accepted as just part of everyday life and unfortunately conventional western medicine is so focused on treating only the symptoms of chronic disease that prevention often goes ignored.

THE SOBERING STATISTICS
From a statistical standpoint, the report on chronic disease in the United States reads more like that of a third world nation instead of one whose government continually insists we have “the best health care system in the world”. For those unfamiliar with the near-crisis situation facing the United States, consider these statistics:

70 percent, 7 out of 10, of all deaths among Americans each year are from chronic disease.

Heart disease, cancer and stroke account for more than 50 percent of all deaths in the U.S.

25 percent of Americans have one or more daily activity limitations due to chronic disease.

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability, with nearly 19 million Americans reporting activity limitations

Diabetes continues to be the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower-extremity amputations, and blindness among adults ages 20 through 74.

41 percent, nearly half, of all Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

CHILDRENS STATISTICS
Perhaps the most disconcerting statistic is that faced by America’s children. Since 1950, childhood cancer in the United States has increased more than 67 percent. Today, 2.5 million American babies are born with birth defects, 310,000 children are poisoned by lead, 6 million are with asthma, and 12 million suffer from developmental disorders like autism or attention deficit hyperactivity

NOW THE GOOD NEWS
However the good news is you don’t have to be sick. Chronic diseases can be preventable and sometimes even reversible by learning how to avoid the modern day causes and understanding why these diseases are now so widespread.

TOXICITY AND DEFICIENCY: THE CASE AGAINST THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY
The U.S. ranks first in the world in technological achievement but just 24th in Healthy Life Expectancy (HALE) according to the World Health Organization (WHO). While modern day U.S. technology and industry has made life in America easier, more convenient, and more productive, it has also dramatically changed the American diet, the environment, our food, and our lifestyles in ways that has become bad for our health. In America today, these changes has caused us to become both nutrient and oxygen deficient and has overloaded us with food, chemical and environmental toxins to such levels our bodies are not designed to handle. Long term exposure to these two elements will over time cause enough cellular damage that the cells begin to malfunction which leads to the development of chronic disease.

Live free of chronic disease

PREVENTION: YOU CAN LIVE HEALTHY AND FREE OF CHRONIC DISEASE
In modern day America, achieving good health requires both knowledge and commitment. Deciding to live a healthier lifestyle in order to prevent or reverse chronic disease is a personal choice that only you can make for yourself and your family, no one is going to do it for you. But given the chance, your body has the amazing ability to heal itself. By learning what the modern day causes of chronic disease are and then creating healthy habits that gives your body what it needs to cleanse and detoxify itself, enables your body’s self-healing ability and allows itself to restore it’s own good health.

WHY GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD INGREDIENTS SHOULD BE LABELED IN THE U.S.
One of the biggest issues concerning food safety in the U.S. today is – should foods that contain genetically modified ingredients be labeled?

The safety of genetically modified food has been the source of intense controversy and under current law, the U.S. government does not mandate food manufacturers to list any genetically modified food ingredients because, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “genetically modified food is safe and is not substantially different from conventional food”.

However, many environmental health scientists and organizations strongly oppose the <a href="http://www.seedsofdeception.com/Public/AboutGeneticallyModifiedFoods/HealthRisksBrochure/index.cfm"target="_blank">FDA’s claim and for a number of reasons. Citing actual documented cases of illness and even death associated with eating genetically modified food, these organizations are demanding that these foods be <a href="http://online.sfsu.edu/~rone/GEessays/GEF%20labelling.htm"target="_blank">labeled so that people in the U.S. can have a choice as to whether or not they want to consume them.

Already many countries have banned foods that contain genetically modified food ingredients unless they are clearly labeled but since their introduction here into the U.S. in the mid 1990′s, the sale and distribution of these foods have gone unregulated by the FDA and because they are not labeled, Americans have been unknowingly eating genetically modified food. Currently in the U.S., 70 percent of the food we eat contain genetically modified food ingredients and according to industry officials, this figure will continue to increase.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD
Subsequent to the introduction of genetically modified food into the U.S. and world food supply, investigations and research conducted by third party laboratories and research scientists has uncovered much evidence that strongly indicate and in some cases clearly show that planting and consuming these foods could potentially cause serious, far-reaching, and even irreversible health and environmental complications not just now but for generations to come. It was also discovered that regardless of what you have read or heard, genetically modified food has never been subjected to rigorous U.S. government safety testing as some would lead you to believe.

In addition, these investigations have disclosed substantial proof of a concerted effort by Monsanto, the world’s largest producer of genetically modified food, and FDA officials to suppress and manipulate reports and warnings from scientists, some within the <a href="http://www.organicconsumers.org/monlink.cfm"target="-blank">FDA itself, about the uncertainty regarding the <a href="http://www.actionbioscience.org/biotech/pusztai.html#top"target="_blank">safety of genetically modified food.

One of the conclusions drawn as a result of these investigations is there seems to be no conclusive peer-reviewed scientific data supporting the U.S. government’s claim that these foods are safe. In fact, what was discovered was that the <a href="http://www.seedsofdeception.com/Public/AboutGeneticallyModifiedFoods/index.cfm"target="_blank">FDA based their decision in 1992 to approve the use of genetically modified food solely on the voluntary submissions of test results conducted by <a href="http://www.truth-out.org/monsanto-big-brother-new-world-agricultural-order-an-interview-with-marie-monique-robin60776"target="_blank">Monsanto and that the FDA never conducted any safety tests of their own.

Because of the lack of <a href="http://www.psrast.org/jfreqtst.htm"target="_blank">testing and long term studies on human health by the FDA, it has been determined that the <a href="http://www.seedsofdeception.com/Public/AboutGeneticallyModifiedFoods/index.cfm"target="_blank">FDA was never in a position to determine whether or not genetically modified food is actually safe and should not have approved their use based only on safety claims made by these food’s manufacturers.

The one thing that has become clear through these investigations is the likelihood that genetically modified food was in the very early experimental stages when the FDA approved them and little if anything was known about any potential adverse, long term impacts these foods could have on human and environmental health and that what was known about any risks to human health by the makers of these foods has probably been carefully kept secret.

Since then, the dangers and potential dangers of genetically modified food has been well documented by scores of scientists from around the world. Tests on laboratory rats has seen results from unanticipated and unexpected diseases to even <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/12/monsantos-gmo-corn-linked_n_420365.html"target="_blank">organ failure causing concerns about the unpredictable nature of genetically modified food. Other concerns include toxic and allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, immune suppression, and possible new serious diseases.

Already we have seen an increase of chronic disease, especially in childhood and non-smoking related cancer, in the U.S. since their introduction but because our food is not specifically labeled as containing genetically modified food ingredients, it’s impossible for scientists to determine if the two are related.

Some scientists have called for an outright ban of these bioengineered foods while others are insisting that at the very least these foods should be labeled until further, more intense testing takes place to determine if these foods are in fact safe for long term human consumption.

One scientist in particular, <a href="http://www.davidsuzuki.org/about/"target="_blank">Dr. David Suzuki, recently commented about genetically modified food saying, “Any scientist that tells you they are safe is either ignorant or lying to you”.

To date, the FDA still does not require genetically modified food ingredients to be labeled on U.S. food, despite increasing scientific evidence of the potential harm these foods can cause to human health and the environment. However, some food companies are now taking action by labeling certain products or ingredients as “non-gmo”, which means made without genetically modified food ingredients.

We as American consumers have the right to know how our food is produced and what is in the food we eat in order to make informed and wise decisions as to what we choose to feed our families. With so much controversy surrounding the safety of genetically modified foods it would be in our best interest as consumers to have these foods labeled.
